Jean Smart wants to regain the spotlight in the Emmy race for comedy leading lady – but will another leading lady eclipse her?
Smart won last year’s Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work as veteran stand-up comic Deborah Vance on HBO Max Chop, and she’s back again this year to defend her crown. She’s not the only former winner in the race, though: Rachel Brosnahan is back to play for the fourth time in the category The wonderful Mrs. Maisel‘s title character (another female comedian!), a role that earned her an Emmy in 2018.
Kaley Cuoco is nominated to play for the second straight year The flight attendant‘s random spy Cassie, and Issa Rae conceded her third nod for Unsurelast season. Also, two Emmy rookies are in contention for the grand prize: Quinta Brunson, nominated for playing the idealistic teacher Janine on ABC Abbott Elementary School; and Elle Fanning, who was praised for playing the monarch Catherine the Great in Hulu’s alt-history comedy The great.
