Disney has long been in the business of making live-action remakes of old classic animated films. Out of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin to dumbo, mulan and a few others, it’s only natural that the lovable wooden puppet Pinocchio would become a real boy next on screen.
On Wednesday, Disney+ released the first look at its latest live-action project, themed around the classic 1940 animated film Pinocchio. With a top-class cast, the dark and whimsical film aims to win back the hearts of many in its own modern way.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming film.
For those unfamiliar with the original, the film is based on an 1883 children’s book titled That Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, an Italian author. The story takes place in Italy, where a woodcarver named Geppetto lives.
Geppetto creates Pinocchio, a wooden puppet that comes to life after Geppetto wishes a star that Pinocchio was a real boy. Through a lot of magic and love, Pinocchio has a chance to prove himself worthy of being a real boy, but to do so he must first overcome several worldly temptations and become selfless and honest.
cast and crew
The live adaptation is directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also directed Forrest Gump, the Back to the Future Franchise, Throw away and the polar express, among many others. Zemeckis is also credited with writing the film.
What many of Zemeckis’ films have in common is Tom Hanks in a starring role and Pinocchio will be no different. Hanks will play the meek Geppetto, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will voice Pinocchio.
Other cast members include Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, Cynthia Erivo as Blue Fairy, Keegan Michael-Key as Honest John, Luke Evans as Coachman, and Giuseppe Battiston as Stromboli.
Release date and streaming
The film will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on September 8, a day that marks Disney’s anniversary of the streaming service.
The special event leads up to D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, taking place beginning September 9 in Anaheim, California.
