MULTAN, Pakistan — A tractor-drawn cart carrying villagers to a shrine fell into an irrigation canal in eastern Pakistan, killing at least 10 people, a relief official said on Saturday.

Ahmed Kamal, head of the Dera Ghazi Khan district rescue service in Punjab province, said 27 of the 46 people on board the cart had been rescued after Friday’s accident when the operation was suspended. due to darkness. Five bodies were recovered and some of those rescued were injured, he said.

Kamal said five more bodies had been found when the search resumed on Saturday. He said the dead included three children and seven women. Nine people were still missing on Saturday.

Such incidents often occur in Pakistan where transport infrastructure is often substandard, especially in rural villages, and people are largely unaware of safety standards.
