India to host 44th ISO COPOLCO plenary; aims to strengthen global standards
NEW DELHI: India is gearing up to host the 44th annual ISO COPOLCO plenary meeting from May 23-26, 2023, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said.
The event, which will take place in New Delhi, will be inaugurated by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Chairman, COPOLCO, Sadie Dainton, ISO General Secretary Serjio Mujica and other ISO senior officials will also attend the event.
ISO COPOLCO, known as the Consumer Policy Committee, is an essential committee under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) responsible for promoting consumer interests in the standardization process and ensuring that standards are developed with consumer needs in mind.
In addition to various activities aimed at increasing consumer involvement in the standardization process, the grand event, hosted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s national standards body, will include dialogue sessions and workshops on relevant themes .
The four-day plenary session will witness the prominent presence of government and business leaders, as well as an international delegation of leading global stakeholders.
The plenary session will focus on people-centred approaches and themes such as ‘Consumer Engagement Challenges and Good Practices’, ‘Empowering Consumers for a Sustainable Future’ and ‘Consumer Protection and Legal Frameworks’.
The conference will also feature workshops, speeches by various high-level speakers, including ministers and prominent figures from around the world, and panel discussions on consumer engagement issues.
The International Standards Organization (ISO), an international body with 168 member countries, plays a vital role in developing standards that impact a wide range of business and social sectors worldwide. Through their consumer standards development committee, COPOLCO, ISO actively involves the general public in the standardization process.
