HBO’s house of the dragon based on events described in fire & blood, George RR Martin’s book detailing the history of House Targaryen. Fire & Blood was released in 2018 and serves as a companion to the A Song of Ice and Fire Series.
But not how A Song of Ice & Fire, Fire & Blood is not written as a story. Instead, it contains many different stories, all woven together as historical text. The book jumps from one point in time to the next, covering hundreds and hundreds of years – describing them from afar rather than through the eyes of the characters involved.
And there it is house of the dragon differs from the book on which it is based. Rather than adapting Martin’s work word for word, the series takes chunks of it Fire & Blood and expands them.
How HBO’s prequel series differs from George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood
Even though house of the dragon based on the events of George RR Martin fire & blood, it differs from the book in one essential way.
Fire & Blood outlines the long history of House Targaryen in a way more akin to historical text, while HBO’s prequel transforms a major event – the Dance of the Dragons – into a full-fledged story.
Rather than having the Targaryen backstory described by an outside narrator, the show throws viewers directly into the Targaryen Civil War and provides the perspectives of all the main actors involved. So who is thinking of picking up Fire & Blood You should not expect an identical experience reading the book and watching the prequel.
However, the HBO series could cover more of the Targaryens’ history if given the chance. Speaking to Collider, showrunner Ryan Condal emphasized just how many stories the source material offers:
“There really are 300 years of Targaryen history to explore, and there are a lot of stories in there that are really fascinating. There is the story of the Conquest, the story before the Conquest, the Targaryens leave old Valyria. They have a story like this where the Targaryens have dragons and are in power. And then there are also stories where the Targaryens no longer have dragons but are still in power.”
In this sense, house of the dragon could have a long lifespan.
New episodes of house of the dragon Airs every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
