James Gunn comes to his defense Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 The High Evolutionary villain, played by Chukwudi Iwuji.

On Monday, the new co-president of DC Studios posted a photo of Iwuji in character on the set of the upcoming Marvel movie and captioned it, “Can’t wait for you to meet this guy.”

One Instagram user left a lengthy comment on Gunn’s photo, saying, “Damn… another white guy they turned black guy. Why don’t they just leave him white or I don’t know… pick a different minority? How about Asian or gasp! Latino?” (How many Latinos and Asians in the MCU?like 5?

The user continued, “Next time, the main character (hero/villain) will be trans, gay or non-binary (when they’re not in the comics). Sad and pathetic. They pick on race and what is PC and not on representation and what was established.”

Gunn fired back, writing, “I picked the best actor, period, and best person for the role. I don’t care what race chukwudi_iwuji is, so drop your racist assumptions about why he was cast. (And by the way, he plays a guy who’s almost always purple.)”

Gunn had previously worked with Iwuji on peace makerthe HBO Max series from which it spun off Suicide Squad.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 It marks the final installment in the franchise and Gunn’s final venture at Marvel, as he now heads up DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. The movie hits theaters May 5 and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Will Poulter.
