“Speed,” “The Hunt for Red October” Film Editor Cannes 79 – The Hollywood Reporter
John Wright, the film editor who received Oscar nominations for his work on Jan de Bont Speed And Hunt for Red October, one of six films he made for John McTiernan, is dead. He was 79 years old.
Wright died April 20 at his home in Calabasas after a battle with prostate and bone cancer, his wife of 57 years, Jane Wright, said. Hollywood Reporter.
Wright’s resume also included other high-profile movies like Sam Peckinpah’s Convoy (1978), Paul Michael Glaser running guy (1987), Stan Dragotti Necessary cruelty (1991), John Woo broken arrow (1996), Bryan Singer X-Men (2000), James Gartner Glory Road (2006) and Louis Leterrier Incredible Hulk (2008).
Collaboration with directors Mel Gibson on The passion of Christ (2004) and Apocalypto (2006); With Graeme Clifford Francis (1982) and Cube gloss (1989); and with Randall Wallace secretarial (2010) and Heaven is real (2014).
Wright was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1989 for editing My name is Bill W.the TV movie by Daniel Petrie about the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous that starred James Woods and James Garner, and two years later won another CBS Hallmark Hall of Fame cut, Sarah, plain and longStarring Glenn Close, Christopher Walken.
The latter is directed by Glenn Jordan. Wright also worked with Jordan on three other highly rated telecoms: 1979 family manstarring Ed Asner; 1984 heartsstarring Mary Tyler Moore; and 1980 Women’s roomstarring Lee Remic; And on two features: Only when I laugh (1981) and mass appeal (1984).

Born in Glendale, Wright graduated from Van Nuys High School and landed his first job as an editor at KABC-TV. He then worked for National Geographic and Jacques Cousteau Specials before working as an assistant film editor Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Bad news bear (1976).
1976 saw him receive his first feature film editor credits, on Acapulco Gold And dogBoth were directed by Bert Brinkerhoff.
Wright also cut the 1978 pilot for the CBS drama Paper hunt and movies fork (1981), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Spleen (1991), Deep hike (1998) and Belfast story (2013).
In addition to his wife, the survivors included his children, Amy and Kurt, and his grandchildren, Edgar, Holden, and Dash.
